Not only was this race due to night time and the gravel traps a difficult one to master, there were also some missing seats at this night race in Jeddah on Saturday. Preparing for it, everyone was already on high alert, as half an hour before the green flag, half of the grid didn’t even make any laps for training. The interviews were clear: this is going to be a tough one, a nail biter, a challenge. Everything was in the cards, but as the 18 cars started, when the green flag was waved, merely 10 seconds later, the race was already in shambles.
Kuldis made the pole into a secure move into the front after the race start, but especially in the back, we saw cars spinning before turn 1. A lack of training was the result of the first takedown and the coming minutes of the race didn’t make it easier on the drivers. Driver of the day was undoubtedly Ciaran Yates for LAME Motorsports, who secured himself 5th position after not qualifying due to a ban.
In the end, only 11 people, which would technically be 5.5 teams out of 11 registered finished the race, marking the first big low of the series in general. As the reports are analyzed, we wait for the penalties and HOPE for a better race at Red Bull Ring.
Spark Plug sees a revive – and we love it!
What was a fresh start to the week was The Spark Plug, which features the track for the upcoming TWS races from now on. 12 drivers started on Sunday after the Jeddah race on Red Bull Ring, making this event an official revive of the Spark Plug after the unfortunate drought of drivers in the previous weeks. Sundays race ended with G. H. in first, while TWS drivers Matt Contreras (Nordoaker x CUMK Racing) and Imanol Salvador (LGI Racing Team) completed the podium. Trompke (Muffler Shop Racing – not driving in TWS) secured a very solid 4th, while Mikus Actiņš (Latvian Junior Locomotives) and Lukáš Gruber (Italczech Racing) ran into problems, only finishing 8th and 9th.
The second day saw a few problem with the race start and resulted in only 4 drivers starting. Imanol Salvador, Mick Trompke and Matt Contreras made podium, while Lukáš Gruber had to crawl back to pits due to heavy damage, finishing 4th.
Tuesday showed good numbers aswell, bringing the interest of the Tatuus back in the map. A statement was set, as LGI Racing team raced over the line in a 1-2-3 order, after Trompke suffered huge damages to him crashing, taking 2nd place out of his hands. Simon Durkac was the man of the day, winning the Spark Plug for the first time since season 2 started.
Should those numbers keep up, the Spark Plug is surely here to stay and interest growing might wake up some drivers, that could be seen in the second season of TWS!
