Countdown to the 24 Hours of Daytona: Muffler Shop Racing Takes on the Challenge

The 24 Hours of Daytona, a legendary endurance race that tests skill, strategy, and perseverance, kicks off tomorrow at 13:00 CET. Muffler Shop Racing enters the fray with three highly prepared teams, each ready to push the limits across the clock. With the grueling Daytona International Speedway as their battleground, the stage is set for a spectacle of speed and endurance.

The Track: Daytona International Speedway

Daytona’s famed 5.73 km (3.56-mile) layout is a masterpiece of endurance racing. The circuit combines the iconic high-banked oval with a technical infield section, offering a mix of high-speed straights and challenging corners. Key features include:

  • Turn 1: A sharp left-hander off the tri-oval, often the site of early chaos in multi-class battles.
  • International Horseshoe: A challenging hairpin demanding precision braking and careful exits.
  • Le Mans Chicane (Bus Stop): A tricky section on the back straight requiring flawless control to maintain momentum.
The combination of night racing, varying weather conditions, and the unique demands of multiclass competition makes Daytona a true endurance classic.

The Cars

  • Mercedes-AMG GT3 (2015):
Chosen by Team 1 and Team 2, this GT3-class beast combines raw power with consistent handling. Powered by a naturally aspirated 6.2L V8, it delivers immense torque and stability, making it a favorite for endurance racing. Its robust aerodynamics and reliable drivetrain are key for surviving the grueling 24-hour battle.
  • Duqueine D08 LMP3:
The LMP-class entry for Team LMP is a lightweight prototype designed for speed and agility. Equipped with a 5.0L V8 engine, it offers incredible downforce and precision through corners. Perfect for the demands of Daytona, its nimbleness will help navigate through slower GT traffic.

The Teams

Muffler Shop Racing fields three teams, each with unique strengths and challenges:

Team 1

Drivers: A. E. Gavars, O. Tomala, T. Schlebusch, V. Türker, S. B. Stattin
A balanced lineup of talent, Team 1 is prepared to leverage the Mercedes-AMG GT3’s reliability to stay competitive in the GT3 class.

Team 2

Drivers: M. Trompke, S. Durkac, M. Olteanu, M. Fusco (TBD), N. V. D. Meijde
Facing some uncertainty with Mitch Fusco’s potential absence, Team 2 remains focused on delivering consistent stints. Driver M. Trompke is optimistic, noting the team’s collaborative setup work and Olteanu’s extensive experience:

“Olteanu made about 300 laps on this track and is the most experienced for this race in particular, which is why he has the best time and will probably race the most.”

Team LMP

Drivers: Y. Lobkov, S. Iordache, K. Kudlis, A. Surve, C. Potenza
Racing in the LMP3 category, Team LMP is aiming high with their Duqueine D08. Driver A. Surve reflects on their meticulous preparation:

“The team is almost ready… we are still trying to extract those few tenths by looking at each other’s telemetry. If we can keep everything clean, we’re easily on for a Top 10 finish, maybe even Top 7.”

Driver Insights

The drivers have shared their thoughts as they head into this grueling challenge:

  • M. Trompke: “My goal is finishing. no terminal damage, no disqualifications. For the others, it’s about the experience.”
  • S. Durkac: “I’m prepared too. If I make it, I’ll cook.”
  • A. Surve: “The main focus is managing Turn 1… even the slightest damage will cost time.”
