We have seen a lot of incidents today in the Friendship today at Biķernieki! While Gavars could secure himself valueable points for his, what looks to be, third championship win, Mikus Actins, who is also at home at the circuit had to leave the circuit earlier then expected. We tried to get a bit of information out of him, but as he was walking into his private area, his only word to the microphone was “Disaster”.
On the final lap, Gavars lost it right before Seiler and still went over the line with 30 seconds to spare.
“Always a good feeling, winning at Biķernieki, to be honest I was expecting a bit more competition seeing how the previous race at Grobnik went but nonetheless a win is a win and points are points” A. E. Gavars, Latvian Lightning Locomotives.
2nd and third place was secured by Burgt Racing! Mike Van Der Burgt who had a very turbulent hunt from 6th to 3rd after the start added:
For Friendship cup we didn’t really have a strategy, since pitting is not necessary and costs too much time. We just tried to push the whole race and do our best. The car was a real joy to drive around this ciruit and kept us entertained. This is the best car we ever drove around Bikernieki (High Speed layout). The suspension and downforce is just right for this track. What worked for us is finetuning the setup to suit this track, and communicated well.
The real fun for me personally was the photo finish at the end of this race. I was full of adrenalin. ~Mike Van Der Burgt
The new rising star of this race was without a shadow of a doubt Job Schouwenaars. A bigger miscalculation of his fuel strategy forced him into the pits to refuel. While he was entering the pit, he used a bit too much speed and earned himself a drive through right after his refuling. Coming out 7th place the hunt was on and Schouwenaars made a very good recovery to 5th place.
We waited, as the stewards were deciding, what to do about the Incident at Elkonis with Bizhev. After a few hours of reviewing the collision, a race incident was the final decision of the stewards.
